UN Security Council will discuss Syria chemical weapons track

GENEVA: Today (4 Octo-ber), the Security Council will convene for an open briefing, followed by clos-ed consultations, on Haiti. Special Representative and head of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) Helen La Lime will brief on recent developments and the Secretary-General’s latest report on BINUH. A civil society representative may also brief.

Also on Monday, there will be a briefing and consultations on the Syria chemical weapons track. High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu is the anticipated briefer.

On Tuesday (5 October), the Security Council will hold an open briefing, followed by closed consultations, on the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and on Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) sanctions. Special Representative and head of MONUSCO Bintou Keita is expected to brief on the Secretary-General’s latest report on the DRC. Ambassador Abdou Abarry (Niger) will brief in his capacity as chair of the 1533 DRC Sanctions Com-mittee. A civil society representative may also brief.

There will be a briefing in closed consultations on the activities of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan Heights on Tuesday. Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix is the anticipated briefer.

On Wednesday (6 October), the Security Council will receive a briefing on the Secretary-General’s seventh biennial report on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW). The expected briefers are UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu, Executive Secretary of the Regional Centre on Small Arms in the Great Lakes Region, the Horn of Africa and Bordering States (RECSA) Lieutenant General Badreldin Elamin Abdelgadir, and Senior Researcher at the Small Arms Survey David Lochhead.

This week, Council members are expected to continue negotiating a draft resolution on the protection of education in conflict, which was initiated by Niger and Norway.

At the subsidiary body level, the Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations will convene on Wednesday (6 October) for a meeting focusing on the work of the UN Police (UNPOL). UN Police Adviser Luís Carrilho is expected to brief.

On Thursday (7 October), there will be a meeting of the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee.

The Informal Working Group on Documentation and Other Procedural Questions (IWG) will hold a meeting on Friday (8 October). It will discuss, among other things, reflections and proposals for future action regarding the implementation of Note 507 on the Council’s working methods.

On Friday (8 October), there will be an Arria-formula meeting on Belarus, at the initiative of Estonia.
