Troika welcomes agreement to re-instate Dr Abdalla Hamdok as PM of Sudan

F.P. Report

BRUSSELS: The Troika (Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States), the European Union, Switzerland and Canada welcome the agreement to re-instate Dr Abdalla Hamdok as Prime Minister of a civilian-led transitional government, pending elections.

We are encouraged by the renewed commitment to the 2019 Constitutional Declaration as the basis of the transition towards democracy. We welcome the release from house arrest of Dr Hamdok, but urge the immediate release of all other political detainees, not only in Khartoum but in all parts of the country. These are all crucial steps towards restoring Sudan’s transition, constitutional order and rule of law.

We reiterate our solidarity with the Sudanese people and our support for a successful transition leading to a free, democratic, just and peaceful Sudan. It is essential that the next steps meet the aspirations of the people, including through a genuinely inclusive and consultative approach to establishing the remaining transitional institutions.

We continue to regret and condemn the loss of life, violence and human rights violations which have taken place since 25 October. Dozens of protesters have been killed, and hundreds injured or arbitrarily detained. Medical professionals have been prevented from carrying out their duties and journalists have been assaulted. We welcome the commitment to investigate deaths and injuries among protesters, and call for this investigation to be thorough, independent and transparent. It remains essential that the Sudanese people are permitted to peacefully express their opinions, free from violence or the threat thereof.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the families and friends of those who have lost their lives while seeking to defend their rights.
