BERLIN: The SPD appr-oves the negotiated traffic light coalition agreement with an overwhelming majority. Chancellor-designate Olaf Scholz previously underlined in his speech at the digital SPD party congress the three parties’ common aspiration to progress.
“Departure for Germany. Let’s tackle it. ”The forward-looking motto of the digital SPD party congress in hybrid implementation was confirmed by the delegates with a large majority. 98.8 percent voted on Saturday for the coalition agreement negotiated between the SPD, Greens and FDP. Previously, the party chairmen Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans and the future chancellor, Olaf Scholz, had campaigned for acceptance.
“We write history with the traffic light,” emphasized party leader Saskia Esken. More decency on the job market and more respect for everyone and every woman – these are the central goals of Olaf Scholz’s new government. “We are back with full strength, the social democracy is the leading force in this country,” reminded the SPD chairman Norbert Walter-Borjans. Now the brakes could be released, he said, referring to the often difficult cooperation with the Union. The SPD started with broad participation in its future program. Today one will seal the departure into the future with a coalition agreement.
Effective, committed climate protection, a higher minimum wage, more affordable housing, the modernization of the economy and society, digitalization. Much now seems possible, which in the past was at best possible in small steps because of a hesitant Union.
Chancellor-designate Olaf Scholz referred to the common basis of the future traffic light coalition. With different priorities, all three parties – SPD, Greens and FDP – are clearly oriented towards progress in order to improve people’s lives. The new government will take a risk and not duck back.
“A departure can take place for Germany”, Scholz is certain. “It is also a government that is tackling progress at a time when it would be dangerous not to do so.” His promise: “We want to dare to make more progress!”
SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil summed up the overwhelming voting result of the delegates: “We are all up for this government. We want to do it. ”
On Sunday, the FDP will also discuss the coalition agreement at its party congress, and on Monday the Greens will announce the result of their member survey. The election of the new Federal Chancellor is planned for the middle of next week.
And the future chancellor doesn’t want to lose any time afterwards: “Now let’s get down to work,” commented Scholz shortly at the end of the party congress.
