BRUSSELS: On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Peace Agreement between the Government of Colombia and the former rebel group FARC-EP, the EU reaffirms its support to this historic deal.
The Agreement, which brought to an end a decades-long conflict that killed more than 200,000 people and left millions displaced, has saved thousands of lives since its signature. The FARC have disarmed and the vast majority of former combatants remain committed to reincorporation into society. The institutions of the integral system of truth, justice, reparation and non-repetition are fully operational and working together with Colombia’s ordinary justice system.
However, peace has not yet reached all parts of Colombia. The security situation in remote and marginalised areas remains critical and represents the main challenge to the peace process today. There remains continued violence against local communities and the assassinations of their leaders, as well as of human rights and environmental defenders and former combatants. Comprehensive state presence in these territories is a precondition for peace and stability, including civilian institutions and support for economic and social development, building on the Colombian Government’s Development Programmes with a Territorial Focus.
The Colombian Peace Agreement is seen as a model around the world. The EU reaffirms its firm support for the Agreement’s full implementation.
We will continue to work closely with the Government, the Comunes party (ex-FARC), civil society and all national stakeholders and international partners, in particular the UN, the Organisation of the American States and the guarantor countries, to build the lasting peace that the Colombian people deserve.
