BEIRUT (RIA Novosti): Damascus condemns the decision of the Turkish parliament to extend the presence of the Turkish armed forces in Iraq and Syria , such steps threaten stability in the region, according to a statement released on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the SAR.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan earlier said about “an overflowing cup of patience” because of the latest “attacks of terrorists” in Syria, according to him, Ankara will soon eliminate this threat on its own. The Turkish parliament on Tuesday extended the permission for the use of Turkish armed forces in Iraq and Syria by two years. The Russian Foreign Ministry, when asked about the attitude to a possible large-scale operation of Turkey in Syria, said that any military preparations should take into account the sovereignty of Syria.
“Syria strongly condemns the decision taken by the Turkish parliament a few days ago to extend for a period of two years the permission to use the armed forces by the decision of the Turkish president in Iraq and Syria,” the statement reads.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry noted that “the policy of the Turkish President poses a threat to stability and security in the region and in the world in connection with the ongoing attacks in Syria in violation of UN Security Council resolutions .”
According to the communiqué, Syria reserves the right to retaliate within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions and international law to protect its own sovereignty.
“Syria calls on the international community to hold the Turkish authorities accountable for war crimes and aggression against it, and also demands compensation in favor of the Syrian state for actions against Syrian citizens and damage to infrastructure,” the document says.
